My work is an investigation of thematic elements that are frequently used to define culture, yet are subject to interpretation to suit the needs of various programs and ideologies. These include things like religion, nationalism, science, sports, and war. Of concern to me are the paradoxical relationships that develop among these cultural strands and how unstable the concept of meaning can become.

Painting is an ideal expression for this as the painted image is representative of traditional symbologies yet remains part of contemporary art. More importantly there is an expectation of eventual truth inherent in the image that remains a powerful force in the mind of the audience. I like to present the possibility of meaning through various appropriations, though it is ultimately up to the viewer to find a personal threshold between the familiar and the unknowable.
